Beginning of a new day every day

MSC archived stories - May 21, 2022

It's been over 7 months since the inception of my anticipated project for Faith in Zambia. Her situation was dire, living with 5 cousins under one roof taking care of by only grandmother, to get her an education is my priority before attending to her sleeping condition and later in the year heavy rainy season starts, causing flooding of her compound [youtu.be/HomRjWdYtSo]. Faith used to sleep on the floor with a mat.

I instructed Faith to have a bed base, mattress, bed linen, 2 pillows with cases plus balance money towards her education.

I'm very grateful for CI for always trying to keep me in perspective of what's to expect when infrastructure and logistical challenges, if not more during the pandemic facing Zambia.

"Chelaka, whether a bed frame can be purchased will depend on the size of the home and how much furniture they already have. What children in Zambia call a mat, we would call a mattress. They roll up and can be stored away during the day or, they stay in place and serve as a place to sit during the day too.

When I sponsored my first youth in Zambia I sent funds for a bed of some sort, and the family ended up buying a “hide-a-bed” so that all three youth could sleep on it at night and it could be a couch during the day. It was all they had room for, and mom kept her “matt”ress and rolled it out at night. A few years later I noticed mom bought herself a new matt to sleep on."

This week CI reported back the conclusion of the project, which has been a tremendous help to the Faith's family, and from the final report (added to media) I can see they have wisely used the gift money for her education and to enhance her sleeping experience with comfort… beginning of a new day every day as the sun's rays strike her face when she wakes up and sitting in the bed!

  1. A wonderful EG! I’ve had great success so far helping my Zambian children - Cecilia and Stellah - with education, and I hope you will, too. Good to know Faith is also sleeping more comfortably.

  4. Chelaka this is marvelous! What a special gift to give. We spend 1/3 of our lives on our beds, so they are important. I am wishing her many sweet dreams and luck in her schooling :)

  5. Thank you everyone. Before the project began, I asked Faith how she sleeps on the floor when her house gets flooded. She told me "the rain season is between October and April. When our area is flooded is tricky in sense that at times the floor gets cold and our matt may not be enough for me. But I am managing though with difficulties." Wish I had photos to share with you but the bed surely must a pride possession in their household. Have a beautiful day!

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

Giving Tuesday

MSC archived stories - November 24, 2018 With the  Giving Tuesday  (November 27) campaign in full swing, I thought sharing below resources to gain insight into CI's approach to oral health.   A Smile Restored : www.children.org/FileRoot/1/Docs/JourneysWinter2014.pdf (click download > Open with – Adobe Reader > p.16-17)   Funny Dentist : [youtu.be/PCQYjJUM8DQ]   I have pledged to support the campaign this year because of my sensational superstar, Juliana!

Highlight of my 2018:

MSC archived stories -  January 1, 2019 In accordance with Guatemalan tradition, Katerin took a year break from school – just before I met her to celebrate quinceañera (girl celebrating her 15th birthday). She is now one and a half years away from graduating from the CI program. She is full of hopes for the future and determined to do well in studies, even though there were some setbacks in her academic performance in the past, as revealed in Education Report (ER). The ER, however stated that  “we do not recommend the sponsor send extra contribution for Katerin’s education since the risk that she will not be responsible is high.”    I simply could not believe or accept this premise because I trusted her to do well when she came into my care in early 2017. Katerin wanted to learn typing, so she enrolled in a course at the beginning of the year. In a class of 11 students, she’s doing very well and using a typewriter to write in Spanish. And, we were both fortunate enou...
