Campaign to plant 5 trees

MSC archived stories - March 11, 2023

I don't know if you've noticed a change of wording from 'My kids' to 'My children' in MyCI. I never used to the former expression in my verbal or written conversation – out of courtesy and respect to them.

My new sponsee, Neyli has been with me just over 2 months and writing twice so far. She lives with her mom and does not know who her father was. Being a sponsor to a child like her appropriately defines 'my children' and even more so it's amazing how much a child’s character can resonate with you.

She writes..

Hello

Thank you for writing to me, I am already in classes and yes, I like mathematics. I like it because in the end, everything is perfect and that makes me so curious. In my department, we have a campaign to plant 5 trees per person and I would like you to join too. We are fighting to conserve water. My community is beautiful and fresh but people are starting to neglect it and that cannot be allowed. We would like you to help us too. Thank you very much for all the benefits you give me. I say goodbye to you. Neyli

Today I replied to her..

Dear Neyli,

I hope you're in good health.

I am glad to have received quick responses from you. You're a bright student and it's my pleasure to be your sponsor!

I started to enjoy Mathematics when I was at your age. It does make sense of everything happening around us, after all it's fundamental to all sciences developed by mankind.

You also mentioned about your school campaign to plant trees. Environment is another favourite subject of mine too. Planting trees has so much benefit to the life on our planet. Forests clean the air and absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere.

Have you thought about planting your 5 trees – what type, from where to source seeds or saplings? Are you going to plant them in school grounds, public lands or at home? I have got some ideas for you..

Mango trees can grow to huge heights and provide a shade during the hot summer days in Honduras. Next time, you can buy some Lancetilla mango and after eating use the seed to plant a single tree.

You live in the continent of North America and I live in Europe. Both of us can start to grow a Cypress tree because of its low maintenance to see which one grows faster and well beyond your own height through our seasonal climate changes.

Also, you can produce a poster to educate people the importance of planting trees and how you made a contribution to the global efforts through this wonderful school project.

Finally, on June 5 the World Environment Day I can get 5 trees planted in your honour in the beautiful mountainous Nombre de Dios region of Honduras to help the forests you love to thrive again – what do you think?

With Love,

Chelaka

Would you have written differently?

  1. Absolutely not chelaka! It is a beautiful letter and I love the fact that you are going to have 5 trees planted in Neyli's honor and to honor her passion for the environment. What a caring and sensitive child and sponsor! You two have a lot in common and it will be fun to see how your relationship grows over the years!

  2. Thank you Liro. On the ereyesterday I took a day off from work (as it was my birthday) to ponder over her invitation to join the campaign, so learned about the work of one organisation [onetreeplanted.org]. Also, Neyli was kind of sounding like wanting money for the project, if so I could send an EG.

  3. Planting trees! I absolutely support the endeavor and am glad to know younger generations worldwide value this meaningful project. That’s great Neyli has your support! The return to respecting Children International’s children with the use of “Children”, as opposed to the slang “Kid”… I am relieved to find that unfortunate deviation has been discontinued. Thanks for yet another wonderful post. -

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

Giving Tuesday

MSC archived stories - November 24, 2018 With the  Giving Tuesday  (November 27) campaign in full swing, I thought sharing below resources to gain insight into CI's approach to oral health.   A Smile Restored : www.children.org/FileRoot/1/Docs/JourneysWinter2014.pdf (click download > Open with – Adobe Reader > p.16-17)   Funny Dentist : [youtu.be/PCQYjJUM8DQ]   I have pledged to support the campaign this year because of my sensational superstar, Juliana!

Highlight of my 2018:

MSC archived stories -  January 1, 2019 In accordance with Guatemalan tradition, Katerin took a year break from school – just before I met her to celebrate quinceañera (girl celebrating her 15th birthday). She is now one and a half years away from graduating from the CI program. She is full of hopes for the future and determined to do well in studies, even though there were some setbacks in her academic performance in the past, as revealed in Education Report (ER). The ER, however stated that  “we do not recommend the sponsor send extra contribution for Katerin’s education since the risk that she will not be responsible is high.”    I simply could not believe or accept this premise because I trusted her to do well when she came into my care in early 2017. Katerin wanted to learn typing, so she enrolled in a course at the beginning of the year. In a class of 11 students, she’s doing very well and using a typewriter to write in Spanish. And, we were both fortunate enou...
