Can you guess the odd one out?

MSC archived stories - April 5, 2020

You may have noticed this that sometimes children draw pictures in their letters, which correspond with what they wrote, and other times just random drawing or coloring.

This week, Ana and Mairani who are twice/half each other’s age and go to the same CC wrote about their lives and drew pictures for me. Irrespective of the writings in Spanish, including English translation, I can see their state of mind and the connection they so lovingly want to establish through drawing medium. (images saved to My Media)

  • In 4hrs from Guadalajara going to the beach is a few days picnic for one family. She tells me how pretty the sound of waves crashing on the shore, and so nice and soft the shining sand and beautiful shells on the beach. It seems like they had a boat ride too!
  • Girl hoping to get full marks at year-end exam!
  • Decorative Christmas tree, but it wasn’t clear what she drew on the tree trunk at the bottom, so I had to use Paint > Invert Colors to find what it was… swirl wood grain pattern to differentiate a tree from another object – great insight into child’s inner thoughts!

I wonder if they only were to draw these pictures what message/story would I draw from it. And to make things interesting, can you figure out the odd one out – two of them are related but one not. It’s not about who drew what but what they were talking to convey.

  1. A fun question-I have no idea but the beach and tree drawings both show pleasure in an event/occasion.

  2. Okay, i’ll play. The tree because I don’t see the kid in it. 🤔

  3. Wow! I had no clue you'd take me to a new level of seeing their drawings, just like in an art gallery. I'm excited even to sponsor a child like Cleysi in DR (see Elemay's recent post) as a gift from my fellow sponsors trying to guess. The answer is not mine but by one of the two children, so I will reveal whoever gets it right!

  4. So I asked my daughter to channel her 9 yr old self and give this a shot (with access, of course, to 2 previous wrong answers). She said maybe, the 1st picture because it is not necessarily associated with a date, could be an activity any time. Oh geez! I think now we pointed to all 3 pictures.😬

  5. First one because it has more detail and 2 and 3 are pictures of singular things.

  6. Peppy, I'm honestly blown away by your daughter’s observation. It never occurred to me from 'time' wise, but from self-isolation or being 'indoor' at most times was the nearest I got to her thinking. It was a superb attempt as you're half way there now!

  7. Hi Katherine, You too are right on the odd one out, but sorry my ingenious girl had a different reason for the connected pair.

  8. Just so you all know, to be fair to Ana and Mairani, whoever gets it right first will have the privilege of choosing 2 waiting children from anywhere, so that I can get to pick one of them for sponsorship!

  9. Is the first photo a child in a boat traveling to see you?!

    April 7, 2020

  10. The boat ride wasn't mentioned in the letter, but looking at it I believe she must have been accompanied by her elder sister in the excursion!

  11. I was intrigued by some of you seeing similar characteristics in both their artwork from a different level (i.e. pleasure, people). But can you imagine a poster with the three pictures together just as seen above, and put up at reception/lounge area in each of the 67 CC, the children/parents sitting and waiting for their turn can start to have a conversation about it? Imagine, if no one can works out this ingenious puzzle of a child from CI, and gets publicity world over and millions of people coming to see it framed and hanging right next to the world famous painting by Picasso at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid – then imagine the fame it can bring to CI with flooding of citizens asking for a child to sponsor, the waiting list will be thing of the past! And, if that is not enough, think about its commercial value if this puzzle remains unresolved by CI centenary celebrations in 16yrs time. This is not just a portrait, but a masterpiece!

  13. Hi Bradley, Mmm.. that wasn't the impression I gathered reading the letters, though Mairani has a habit of pleading for me to come and see her :)

  15. Hi Marie, The odd one out is the Beach, and now looking to find the connection between the other two. Good luck!

  16. Is there a mouse or something on the dress poking up behind her arm? Was there also a mouse hiding in their tree??

  17. Thanks Katherine for being so enthusiastic about the puzzle. The only hidden thing I can see of the tree is the spiral (per negative image) – Clue: Without divulging potential IP rights, if you read between my words used to describe the middle picture and it can’t be any other tree (like the one you see in the Beach picture). There is a universal connection/message between the 2nd and 3rd pictures that any parent/sponsor would be familiar with, but this experiment shows how difficult for us to understand the child’s "pictorial language" when they try to depict it back to you!

  23. Wow! Marie, I'm so amazed by your ingenuity ** you had the breakthrough first ** CONGRATULATIONS! I can now reveal that 1st picture drawn by Ana (age 18) and 2nd, 3rd ones by Mairani (age 9). I have added Mairani's letter to My Media now, so you can see what she wanted.

  24. As promised, the Award time.. Thank you for being so quick to confirm your preferences, and I have chosen one and will let you know once added to my account. Of course, Mairani will too receive a special gift for her 10th birthday this July. Finally, I want to thank Nancy, Peppy and your daughter, Katherine, Bradley and Marie for your interest and inspiration. I really liked Nancy's 'pleasure' theory and Peppy daughter's 'time' theory – remarkable!

  25. Thank you Chelaka, you are an inspiration. It was fun trying to solve the puzzle and forget all the situation going on on the planet. I did love the 3 drawings, the one at the beach with the coconut tree and crab remind me of my own drawings at that age. . I am honored that I could give you preferences on 2 children, this is such a personal choice, and I am aware that all children deserve the best, so I picked the 2 that on that moment touched my heart. Of course whoever you choose I will follow their story via your updates with all my heart..

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

Giving Tuesday

MSC archived stories - November 24, 2018 With the  Giving Tuesday  (November 27) campaign in full swing, I thought sharing below resources to gain insight into CI's approach to oral health.   A Smile Restored : www.children.org/FileRoot/1/Docs/JourneysWinter2014.pdf (click download > Open with – Adobe Reader > p.16-17)   Funny Dentist : [youtu.be/PCQYjJUM8DQ]   I have pledged to support the campaign this year because of my sensational superstar, Juliana!

Highlight of my 2018:

MSC archived stories -  January 1, 2019 In accordance with Guatemalan tradition, Katerin took a year break from school – just before I met her to celebrate quinceañera (girl celebrating her 15th birthday). She is now one and a half years away from graduating from the CI program. She is full of hopes for the future and determined to do well in studies, even though there were some setbacks in her academic performance in the past, as revealed in Education Report (ER). The ER, however stated that  “we do not recommend the sponsor send extra contribution for Katerin’s education since the risk that she will not be responsible is high.”    I simply could not believe or accept this premise because I trusted her to do well when she came into my care in early 2017. Katerin wanted to learn typing, so she enrolled in a course at the beginning of the year. In a class of 11 students, she’s doing very well and using a typewriter to write in Spanish. And, we were both fortunate enou...
