Two decades ago, this beautiful movie was shot on location in some of Tehran's (the capital of Iran) poorest areas. I just watched the DVD and was mesmerised by the story of a brother and his sister sharing their only shoes and dream of owning a new pair to go to school – luxury they could not afford.
A pair of shoes is a valuable necessity when growing up young as children's shoe sizes change almost yearly. It has become common purchase on SNG donations because we chose to care!
However a social experiment carried out by UNICEF [viewpure.com/MQcN5DtMT-0] revealed how people's attitude change on children's look, and I wonder if she was to hold a signpost saying "Sponsor Me" could reverse the perception in both scenarios.
I think this was originally on the show, "What would you do?" I recall seeing it on TV and they had to stop the experiment because the child became so upset by how badly people treated her when she was dirty. Ironically, I've had people tell me that my sponsored kids don't look "poor" and I've had to explain that when I've visited, the extended family (not on the visit) were often dressed in old clothes, a bit dirty and, when invited on one trip, they disappeared to get cleaned up and dress in their best clothes to join. The families take pride in having some nice clothes for the annual photos and sponsor visits, but it's unlikely they dress that way daily. It's sad how much judgment occurs just based on appearance :-(

Yes, they do like to wear their best outfit for the sponsors. I even have a fashion diva on my hands already!
