We all at times send gifts to our children, but have you ever considered making a donation to your child's community center?
CI has a Global Philanthropy Team to provide guidance on this, but does it necessarily have to be worth big?
For example, donating books to the library, blood pressure apparatus to the medical center, learning software to the computer lab, etc – something useful to the whole sponsored population (in honor of your child).
This idea, prompted by a CI sponsor’s recent visit to the Tilden-Keller Family Community Center in Delhi [youtu.be/u9caZQHBBGk]. It gave me a sense of the surroundings, the facilities and the work they do at the center, in particular Magic Pathshala [magicpathshala.com] website caught my eye, which they use to teach children English and Math.
At one time CIKC solicited donations by sending a prospectus for various targeted community centers. More recently they mailed letters to solicit funds to upgrade the security systems in specific centers. Both mailings had suggested contribution amounts as well as a space for 'other'. I'm quite sure a gift less than the suggested amount would be helpful and appreciated.

Nancy, Thank you for being our messenger of US news! We never received such mailing regarding support for community centers. Because Rukhsar goes to the same center, I'm exploring few other options such as cushioning of the chairs in the library (shown in photo/video), which may be a rare comfort at home for them, yet motivates to come to the center!

A soft chair would be a treat in the center! Based on the pictures I've seen and those I've received the typical one room homes in which our Delhi children live have no furniture except, perhaps, a bed and an almirah. Meals are eaten while sitting on the floor where a large cloth is placed for food and dishes. During the day the bed is used for the family to sit, visit, watch TV etc. Choosing not to make having furniture a priority may be that it allows more people to live in relative comfort in a small space.

ReplyDeleteHave you looked at My Giving on the CI dashboard? I think making an extra contribution to CI is a generous thing to do. But CI knows where the money is most urgently needed, can help the most children, and will make the biggest impact. I don't think it's a good idea for sponsors to decide how every donation should be used be used and there are already many choices like the anti-parasite fund, the Hope Scholarship, Support a Center, ect that sponsors can pick from.
