I wonder...

MSC archived stories - December 21, 2023

The end of another year is closing in, but aside my own life adventures this year what's happening new at CI. Are we soon be out of India, talking about system upgrades will it benefit sponsor communication, and what about my two little twins in Mexico, how they are up to.. I wonder.

I never had children so young as Ixayana and Joana, so talking to them in writing can be a little challenge. Every day, they see their mom and elder sister around but not me. I wonder, to them 'sponsor' could be an alien being that lives in another world.

Last month, I attended a business conference in the city of Edinburgh. There was a guest speaker, Prof. Steve Peters, a Consultant Psychiatrist who specialises in the functioning of the human mind. In his talk, I learned that there are 3 parts to our brain – human side (us), chimp side (genetics) and computer system. He gave a simple story with its words projected on the screen in front of us and tested to see how we remembered them shortly afterwards. One being 'Traffic Lights' but the story did not mention it, however most of the audience thought it was in his story read out a moment ago. He went onto explain that human (us) tend to use data stored in our 'computer' and make decision, which may not always be true. The chimp side of the brain works the same way, but we do not have any control over what our 'chimp brain' does. For example, the moment you're in direct contact with sunlight, our eyes auto shut itself to protect from harmful rays.

Dr Peters reminded of the twins. Their 'computer system' is so new that no much data to rely upon about me. So, the way to describe myself as caring, loving, the godfather and above all a human, not extraterrestrial, is to send them a DP (story for another day), which UPS delivered successfully earlier this week. Whatever the perceived thoughts they may have of me, when they open the box how will the 'chimp brain' react.. shock, trilled.. I just wonder.

  1. Thanks for your post, Chelaka. Above you touch on Ixayana’s and Joana’s reality. They understand their family and the components of their daily lives such as grocery store, nursery school, church, park, etc. They are constructing knowledge based on real life experiences. Their mother will help them over time to understand the concept of sponsor who cares for them from far away when she shares your letters and gifts. Are you familiar with Piaget’s studies of how young children develop deeper levels of understanding? He proposes the complexities of their cognitive understanding develop between ages five and seven in what he aptly labels “The Five to Seven Shift.” Over the next few years you will feel your relationships with Ixayana and Joana become genuine, friendly, and appreciative as they come to understand a faraway person they cannot see fills the role of Sponsor. What an amazing journey this will be.

  2. Thank you Liza, and Happy New Year! Since you mentioned, I was very interested to know of Jean Piaget's theory of cognitive development in children. He says, children need to build a mental model of their surrounding world. What fascinates me is that how twins do this.. will each be reciprocating their own thinking or something completely different. I sent this message…"Hello my dear 'dhuwa' Ixayana and Joana, I affectionately call 'dhuwa' for daughters as in my mother tongue. As the magical season of the year upon us I send this special gift from Scotland to wish you both a Merry Christmas. I hope you will like my selection of clothes. To see how they fit but in the mood for a dance act, both of you can choose your preferred dress and wear for my follow-up photos. Scotland is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and a lot of places to see around, including Highland cows (called here 'Heelan coos') living not far from me, and you both have the pleasure of keeping him too! Other items I hope will help prepare you for life in the kindergarten."

  3. Such a sweet message to the twins! I noticed the Heelan coo in your photo immediately, of course not knowing of the Highland Cow; an internet search educated me. Yes, it is fascinating to ponder how twins’ experiences, shared and separate, will shape their minds and personalities throughout life as they become individuals but share a unique intimate connection. I can tell you’re really going to cherish this sponsorship in a new dimension.

  4. When two sisters are in sync together the last thing they want is another human like doll, so Heelan coo is something out of their human touch, just hope they are not going to imagine me like him!

  5. I'm so glad the package was finally able to be delivered! The girls are going to be so excited for their new clothes, I can't wait to see the photos from the DP.

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

As the 2022 draws to a close..

My life devoted to helping the children of this world started exactly 17 years ago on this day with Children International. Initially I was looking for a child sponsorship program through UK based organisation because every $ or £ I donate the UK government would have added 25% on top (as opposed to less Income Tax taken off from your earnings in the USA). In other words, living and working in the UK, yet supporting a charity outside the country won't have any tax benefits to either myself or CI. It was a big decision for me personally. I did my research and decided to go with CI and another international program based here for a year just to compare the services. CI stood up to my expectations despite losing that extra governmental support. It was very different or (should I say) the golden time of this organisation. Today, my sponsorship world spans across 3 continents with CI and 3 other local NGOs based in Bhutan and Sri Lanka. In fact my Bhutanese sponsorship inspired by a sto...

Visit to Mundo Petapa

After our long awaited reunion voyage, I thought taking back down the memory lane to remember times of joy CI sponsorship brought to us all. The younger sister, Nicole, niece, grandmother and the parents joined Estephanie to celebrate her 9th birthday anniversary at Mundo Petapa , an amusement park in Guatemala City. This park was inaugurated over four decades ago. There the family discovered various fun activities, especially being enjoyed by the father gave enormous boost to excitement, along with a break for the main event in the cafeteria – what a memorable day made possible by the staff at CI Mariscal! (photos added to my SCS blog ) As I learn about the family closely now, they are not just fun loving but well known and respected in the community. I'm full of admiration for their advocacy by getting children involved in every aspect of life. And Estephanie being 'ahijada' (goddaughter) is a very special honor any sponsor can ever dreamed for. Today, my care in h...
