I was pleasantly surprised to receive her first ever hand-written letter to me (saved to My Media).. so much effort gone into her debut production by even copying over her dad’s writing!
The only girl with 3 younger brothers in the family, she seems to like her mom leading the join hands parade before her dad – powerful message of unity and guardianship!
Their house has walls made of plywood and bamboo, and looks like the access by a fixed ladder. On your visits to the Bicol region, has anyone observed how safe are these houses to live in a typhoon region, often bringing high winds and torrential rains?
She's learning to read, write and draw using early learning kit I sent her last year. They are eternally grateful for every little thing the sponsorship brings to their lives.
Wow! How exciting that she's starting to write on her own (with a little help from dad)! She clearly thinks the world of you. I sponsor two girls from Bicol who live in similar conditions, and while I haven't visited yet, I have to assume typhoon season is difficult.

ReplyDeleteI also used to have a child who lived in an unsturdy house. I sent his family 400$. It was enough to replace the entire roof. Originally the roof was made of palm leafs. Now its made of metal sheets.

The Philippines endures about 20 typhoons a year, so plywood and bamboo walls are often no match for strong winds and rain. I've helped many of my sponsored kids' families replace their leaky roofs with metal sheets. One of them had to be done over again because they used old weak wood as support beams. But it definitely makes a huge difference for families to have a good roof.

rfcrockett – Indeed, she was totally motivated and driven to write by her own, probably the first letter I have seen attempted by a 7yr old, and no doubt she must be waiting now for my reaction and next challenge – tell me the biggest thing she has ever seen in her life to see how clever she can be!

tayross & n23foster – Many thanks for sharing all your experiences. Nearly 20 typhoons a year – the high winds must be passing right through these bamboo houses to have reduced chance of complete destruction, but feeling colder inside because of the chilling effect of the wind, and she must stay warm during rainy seasons plus metal roof vs. thatched/tiled roof – lot to take away!
