I don’t know if you knew you can actually write to a ‘waiting child’ – here is the link:
www.children.org/make-a-difference/other-ways-to-help/volunteer-letter-writing
I have couple of questions:
- Are these messages only given out to a child in the waiting list, or a child of an inactive sponsor may also be included?
- Can I choose a child from the list (state their name/ID), or does CI choose a child appropriate for the message (i.e. below best suits a teenage youth)?
Dear...
As I write this note to you from afar thinking when you will find a sponsor and have grown up waiting for that special person to step into your life, you will be left with only the memory of this very moment.
In my childhood and youth, I used to write down sentiments of life and the world around me as I understood it to be and put up in big letters on a piece of paper pinned onto the wall. I tried to live by my inner convictions and kept asking myself many questions as well as finding answers. It was my own way of being self-motivated.
You can be the same and see how it will make you wiser each day!
Loving thoughts from your friend,
Chelaka

CI created the option of Write to a Child as tool to help us expand our donor base (those who want to donate, but not sponsor). The website info is shared at events held in the U.S., and is typically only used by non-sponsors.

Because we knew the potential was there for current sponsors to locate the portion of the website where Write to a Child lives, we did our best to let sponsors know that they are not writing to their sponsored child/ren.

The letters are printed out and grouped monthly and sent to different agencies. The agencies decide which children to give the letters to based on the content and the children do not write a reply.

Please note: The processing of these letters does not override the processing of sponsor correspondence.

@chelaka: To answer your questions: The letters are distributed to children receiving benefits without a sponsor. You cannot choose which child to write the letter to, we allow the SOA staff to do that.

Debbie – Thanks for the background to this new tool. I just wonder if sponsors were to chip in will the processing of "child/sponsor letters" have a significant impact by the need to translate these "donor/supporter letters" too? I like this tool though as it gives me the opportunity to make a global impact plus the monthly distribution is better/faster than the quarterly EG option!

Oh, sorry Chelaka I should have mentioned, the letters are only sent to countries that have English speaking kids, so no translation needed.
