Mail Services

MSC archived stories - July 27, 2018

I used to receive my CI mailing through national postal carriers of USPS in the USA and Royal Mail in the UK. There have been few occasions where I had to report some posts from CI not being received.

Lately, I started to notice my CI posts are handled by various private mail companies in Europe such as MHI in UK, PPSweden, Bpost in Belgium – wonder this is a step toward more reliable mail delivery at the expense of cost to CI?

On another note, for those of us waiting over a year to send packages to Guatemala via USPS – the latest update from Royal Mail, Feb 20, 2018:

“Guatemalan Post has advised us that preparations are underway to enable Correos y Telegrafos to carry out its activities as the designated postal operator, this is now due to enter its final phase, which could take approx 4 months. As a result, mail services to Guatemala remain suspended.”

I currently use DHL for sending books from Scholastic, MO to Guatemala.

Comments

  1. Speaking as a sponsor of 18 years, Royal Mail has never lost an item from CI. I doubt that would be a common enough reason for them to switch providers. Price might be, but it could equally be down to the national markets being opened up to pivate companies and sub-contracting going on.

  2. I hate to think a mail from CI would be lost at either end, yes even had an unsealed envelop with photos landed at my doorstep!

  3. I don't know if it depends on the part of the country you're in but around a quarter of my CI mail doesn't arrive. Some arrives weeks later looking very beaten up. I rely on the live chat staff being willing to send digital copies and they're always kind enough to do so. I just see it as one of the hazards of being a sponsor based outside the US.

  4. I almost always get CI mailing within 7-10 days – any longer than this could mean something not right, but CI are handling international mailing different now.

  5. In France, I've had things go missing (and received online only) or arrive much later than online or CI notifies me that it was returned as an incorrect address. But this is true of all of my mail coming from the US to France. On the contrary, I don't have the same issue with French mail, so not sure where the problem is in the transition.

I live in the UK and receive all my letters since 2006. Never got one missing. I do not receive all cards/letters from Germany where my family lives.

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

Giving Tuesday

MSC archived stories - November 24, 2018 With the  Giving Tuesday  (November 27) campaign in full swing, I thought sharing below resources to gain insight into CI's approach to oral health.   A Smile Restored : www.children.org/FileRoot/1/Docs/JourneysWinter2014.pdf (click download > Open with – Adobe Reader > p.16-17)   Funny Dentist : [youtu.be/PCQYjJUM8DQ]   I have pledged to support the campaign this year because of my sensational superstar, Juliana!

Highlight of my 2018:

MSC archived stories -  January 1, 2019 In accordance with Guatemalan tradition, Katerin took a year break from school – just before I met her to celebrate quinceañera (girl celebrating her 15th birthday). She is now one and a half years away from graduating from the CI program. She is full of hopes for the future and determined to do well in studies, even though there were some setbacks in her academic performance in the past, as revealed in Education Report (ER). The ER, however stated that  “we do not recommend the sponsor send extra contribution for Katerin’s education since the risk that she will not be responsible is high.”    I simply could not believe or accept this premise because I trusted her to do well when she came into my care in early 2017. Katerin wanted to learn typing, so she enrolled in a course at the beginning of the year. In a class of 11 students, she’s doing very well and using a typewriter to write in Spanish. And, we were both fortunate enou...
