You may wonder what has got to do with them, but read on..
Last July, I've made a special donation in honor of Juliana's 6th birthday to support World Wildlife Fund's efforts to conserve Orangutans’ habitat in Southeast Asia. Among other goodies she received from WWF is a soft plush version of her adopted animal.
As Juliana's third teacher, I write to educate her about the importance of conserving world's most endangered species, but this time thought making a connection to Mount Mayon in the Albay province..
My dear Juliana,
How are you keeping up in the wake of recent Mayon volcano eruption? I was worried and trying to get any news out of the Philippines, but CI had no trace of your whereabouts. Have you moved out of the danger area to live with your relatives or at an evacuation center?
Are you now back at home and going to school? How is your life returning to normality? I hope this letter reaches you in a timely manner and you'll update me on your current situation soon.
Have you seen red-hot lava flowing out Mayon volcano (see photo below)? The magma coming up thousands of miles from below the center of our earth to the surface, and through conical shape of the volcano before erupting at its summit–the weakest point and then steadily flows back down the side of the volcano. To live in the backyard of beautiful Mount Mayon to witness this spectacle is one of the wonders of our planet and must be very special for you!
But your favourite Orangutan would not like the lava destroying their surrounding rainforest. They are known as gardeners of the forest. They spread seeds, which is important for people and other animals like tigers and elephants.
Take care of yourself.
Love, Chelaka
Spectacular picture of the volcano. Childrens' minds are like sponges; they learn so much through nature.

Awesome letter to your child...I think it is great that you are teaching your children about nature and conservation. Juliana looks so happy with her orangutan stuffed toy!

She is so cute and adorable! I love her stuffed animal and the photo of Mount Mayon. I have not heard anything more about the volcano erupting, but I am sure that everything is okay. Hopefully, families can move back to their homes soon.

What a special gift!! Her smile on the photo speaks thousand words! I think your idea is very inspiring, I am going to see if I can do something similar with some of my children. Thank you.
