Sponsorship benefits

MSC archived stories - May 30, 2020

It’s quite a rare seen family photo to follow with welcome gift to your child. As you may have noticed, perhaps this could be their first-time facing the camera in cold outdoor during Delhi wintertime.

The Aashiya’s family lives in one multipurpose room in Shahabad Dairy community. She was sleeping on the floor with a mattress. In my wishes to give some comfort to her sleeping arrangement and despite the limited space available inside, they have gone for a small bed instead of a roll-up mattress. The photo shows that the sponsorship not only benefits your child but also the whole family at large.

In response to my welcome letter, which I shared in my post dated Nov 10, 2019 titled “Starling murmuration!”, Delhi staff intern, Jyoti wrote back saying, as Aashiya had never been sponsored before, she was not a regular visitor at the community center [youtu.be/IxkbpMIeZB4] to receive any program benefits but she already has a favorite teacher – the one who inspired her being Jyoti mam, which goes without saying that the love and care the children receive at CI centers is second to none. (CP letter added to My Media)

A few questions for CI/fellow sponsors:

1. Are children enrolled but never had a sponsor given critical medical & educational support, library & playground use, or birthday & Christmas gifts even if a sibling in the family has/had been sponsored? I understand they are not allowed to participate in any programs until found their first sponsor.

2. How family members can benefit (e.g. not sponsored/enrolled siblings) when a child starts to receive program benefits?

3. Does CI run an immunization program for very young children in the communities?

You should talk with CI to get their answer to your questions. That way you'll know for sure the answers are correct, I'm surprised that you didn't know that no child is "enrolled" in the CI program until they actually have a sponsor. Once a child has their first sponsor) they stay in the program even if that sponsor drops them. All children need a first sponsor to receive benefits.

  2. I'm thinking you've given a comfortable night's sleep to each of the children as I'm sure the bed will be shared!

  3. Barb, Mmm.. I beg to differ with you. My understanding is that all children in the waiting list (previously sponsored or not) are first enrolled in the program before placed on the list. You can read this article, where it says.. "Soon after learning about the organization, Adriana took Fátima to the CI community center, where she was enrolled in the program. Fátima was placed on the waiting list, hoping she’d become sponsored as quickly as possible." [children.org/stories/2018/10_october/through-hardship-to-a-brighter-future] – it'd be useful to have a Glossary on the CI website defining basic terms such as "Active Giving", "Enrolled", "Verklempt" as a quick reference point.

Chelaka. I think you're wrong. I'll post the question to CI on the message board and we should have the answer soon.

  5. Aashiya has a lovely family. The children will rest more comfortably and I’m sure they will have sweet dreams of their sponsor. Living in a multipurpose room, the bed will probably also serve as a play space for those three cuties! Thanks for sharing! This gets added to my “Favorites.”

  6. Since you addressed both CI and Fellow Sponsors I will tackle your immunization question. From memory of a fairly recent post (past couple of years?), I think on the message boards, and which I cannot find now, one of the MSC moderators wrote each government in the countries CI works in has their own requirements and protocol for immunizing children. CI does not have the funds to run an independent immunization program, but can direct families to the local services if needed.

  7. Liza, Thank you! The average home in Bawana and Shahabad Dairy has only 12 sqft of area, so a small bed is ideal for sleeping and (as you said) play area! I thought years ago CI focused on giving children vaccines [vitrinadeinstituciones.blogspot.com/2008/10/children-international.html], though recent Annual Reports don't mention about it anymore.

  8. 3. Does CI run an immunization program for very young children in the communities? Answer: No, we do not have immunization clinics. As mentioned above, each government in the countries CI works in has their own requirements and protocol for immunizing children. CI helps the kids have access to recommended immunizations by helping to direct families to the local services if needed.

  9. As for the blog post you referenced above: Please note that this blog was not an official CI blog, nor was the info provided by CI. Additionally, the info is 12 years-old and references a country that CI no longer works in (although it does say we help them have access to immunizations, which is something we do IF needed). As always, for the most accurate info about sponsorship, the best place to look for answers, such as those you asked, is our website or by calling, chatting or writing to CI's Care Team. Thanks!

If you read Debbies reply on the message board she said that "when we enroll (sign up) a child they do not receive benefits until they become sponsored". "When their first sponsor is found they begin receiving benefits"

DP to Zambia

MSC archived stories -  January 18, 2025 Usually the turnaround time for DP is 4 weeks. It's been a month to next Sunday (Jan 26th) since UPS collected and successfully delivered my DPs to Dulce and the twins. Two years later, last night Simon appeared in my profile as a grown up man. As we aren't getting follow up photos from Zambia anymore, for the first time thought trying DPs to Faith and Simon there, so they will have to come to CC to collect it, where the staff will have a camera to take photos. I remember Zambia used to have the whole family gatherings for EG photoshoot out. So, are there anything special they would be more excited receiving? For example, a football or cricket bat & ball set for Simon, and for Faith.. (no idea!.. may be something to make her elegant hairstyle she has in the latest photo..?). Help me make the list, of course, I don't want to make staff jealous

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

A step in a higher level journey

Estephanie is my former sponsored child through Children International, whom I cared for four and a half years since she was just 6yrs old. She is a gifted and bright child brought up in a loving family of four in Guatemala. Her abrupt departure from the sponsorship program in June 2019 was totally unexpected, even though I was acutely aware of their situation in the family a s well as the city leading up to this moment. Estephanie is not just any sponsored child, but someone who changed my life forever devoting to children in need. For that reason, I call her ‘my miracle little princess’ and she calls me ‘padrino’ (her godfather). In August 2020, fourteen months after her leaving CI, we met again and reunited with the family. It was our momentous encounter of this lifetime. The family has moved on leaving everything behind to start a new life abroad. More importantly , I was fortunate enough to see Estephanie growing up fast in a new world since I last saw her back home. At age...
