THE MYSTERY BED

MSC archived stories - April 18, 2020

My sponsorship in India began in November 2018 with Rukhsar's arrival. She is from Delhi, and was sleeping on the floor with a mattress. Bringing some comfort into the young girl's sleeping regime, she has recently received bed/beddings.

It appears to me that Rukhsar was sleeping on a small-size mattress, but now she has a full-size mattress fitting the bed frame they may have already had in the house (or not sure if it too along with pillows were purchased with the EG – photos added to My Media to see what you think)

What’s baffling me is that slanted/inclined bed with a wedge-shaped cushion on the left. CI told me that she received a foldable full-size mattress, but the mattress itself doesn't look though as fold-able! For any bed experts out there.. does this bed have some reverting mechanism to be able to fold upright in order to allow space for other usage during the day? The family of six lives in a single multi-purpose room.

  1. I am not an expert in beds, but I once went to ikea and bought a big mattress that was fold or rolled very tight.. My daughther is sleeping on it, it is good quality and you would never know it was rolled so small..

  2. Thanks! I've seen pocket sprung mattresses, but Rukhsar's one wasn't roll-packed as it came in original shape/size with a polythene cover on.

  3. I don't know if upright folding will work if the roof is not high enough. If not, this bed frame seems to carry dual functionality by removing the mattress and sliding the wedge part into the base to make it a horizontal bench/table + slanted mattress on the base has benefits of sleeping inclined!.. didn't know until read about it -- [saminasleep.com/sleeping-inclined]

  5. I read that info on inclined beds- I wonder if it will catch up to us in America in a decade or two? This is a great gift, especially since we spend 1/3 (or so) of our lives sleeping. Nicely done as ever, Chelaka!

  6. That is a good question, though I do not know the answer. Beds in general have been difficult for me to envision, like when I hear that a child has a wooden bed. Even with a photo, it can be hard to get a sense of what the bed is like. I'm glad to hear that Rukhsar was able to get some new bedding. A good night's sleep can make all the difference.

  7. Sam, Thanks for raising the question.. This story goes back to the start of the pandemic. Wow, how much of our lives have changed since then. Rukhsar's bed, mattress, bed sheets, winter jackets cost me = $150 (photos are in my media further down). Also, later received the following response from Rukhsar's family (letter added to media) – "About the bed, Rukhsar said that she shares bed with her two sisters Rukhsana and Firdous. They enjoy a good sleep together. Rukhsar said they do not roll the mattress, keep it like that only. They got bed base and mattress as gift and pillows were already there in her house. She shared that she helps her mother in making bed but, tries to clean up the bed daily and wash the bed sheet timely." They actually do sleep inclined as the bed itself shows. I wonder such practice of bed making carpentry goes back to ancient India. I really like the idea of 'sleeping inclined', so perhaps will find one for my new home… inspired by Rukhsar!

  8. sammystar123, the cost to provide a bed and/or bedding varies from country to country and from situation to situation. If you are interested in providing a gift for your sponsored child, please contact our Care Team and they will be able to assist you.

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

Giving Tuesday

MSC archived stories - November 24, 2018 With the  Giving Tuesday  (November 27) campaign in full swing, I thought sharing below resources to gain insight into CI's approach to oral health.   A Smile Restored : www.children.org/FileRoot/1/Docs/JourneysWinter2014.pdf (click download > Open with – Adobe Reader > p.16-17)   Funny Dentist : [youtu.be/PCQYjJUM8DQ]   I have pledged to support the campaign this year because of my sensational superstar, Juliana!

Highlight of my 2018:

MSC archived stories -  January 1, 2019 In accordance with Guatemalan tradition, Katerin took a year break from school – just before I met her to celebrate quinceañera (girl celebrating her 15th birthday). She is now one and a half years away from graduating from the CI program. She is full of hopes for the future and determined to do well in studies, even though there were some setbacks in her academic performance in the past, as revealed in Education Report (ER). The ER, however stated that  “we do not recommend the sponsor send extra contribution for Katerin’s education since the risk that she will not be responsible is high.”    I simply could not believe or accept this premise because I trusted her to do well when she came into my care in early 2017. Katerin wanted to learn typing, so she enrolled in a course at the beginning of the year. In a class of 11 students, she’s doing very well and using a typewriter to write in Spanish. And, we were both fortunate enou...
