Just over a year ago, I wrote a story about two of my sponsored children ("A dilemma", Sept 25, 2021). Those of you who commented gave very inspiring ideas for me to take away, particularly of Barb's.."I'm sure listening to our sponsored children, showing how much you care about them, and not judging them means the world to them!"
Well, fast forward a year later, Nelson's life has got better. Reading his letter (in my media), I wondered how the impact a sponsor could have in a child's life, when he is constantly being scolded by people around.
To me, more than the letters or gifts we send them, giving an opportunity for Nelson to be and benefit from the CI program at Robert and Paula Larkin Center is my greatest satisfaction. In the midst of chaos he experienced every day at home, he feels there is someone still (to him that was probably God's intervention) cares and loves him, which motivated him to do well at school despite lockdown challenges faced during the past 3 years.
I'm immensely proud of Nelson and what he has achieved. It seems wearing bracelets considered to be acceptable attire for his school, but would you give him a wristwatch?

ReplyDeleteI don't think it really matters whether or not Nelson wears it to school. After learning about your watch and how much yours meant to you, getting a watch from his sponsor will have a special sentimental value attached to it. If it's okay with CI ( I don't know how they feel about you sending it) and it's not too expensive, (so it doesn't attract thieves) whether he wears it every day or keeps it safely hidden away doesn't really matter. I'm sure Nelson would treasure it.

Barb, Thanks for the advice. I was reading latest travel advice to the DR; gang violence on the rise, so better avoiding expensive wears for his safety. It'd have to be something he can buy from there rather than me sending DP. Nelson is an avid admirer of Baseball, and telling me one day he wants to be a Major League Baseball (MLB) player (Baseball is the most popular sport in the DR). As the situation in the DR has improved significantly (CI update Oct 2022), I was thinking of getting him a Baseball kit and tickets for the family of 4 to go and see a game at Quisqueya baseball stadium in Santo Domingo (picture added to media), where they are from. Since EG follow-up photos are now taken by them plus they seem to have a cell phone, I'm sure they can share plenty of pictures – any idea of upcoming tournaments happening there?
