World of Delicious Recipes

MSC archived stories - October 31, 2020

I recently asked the children in my second 'group letter' to write a recipe for a healthy dish. They were asked to imagine that one day I travel afar from Scotland to come see them, and they are going to make a special dish just for me. Before my travel, a food bag will be delivered to their home, which contains the following items & ingredients costing total of less than $10.

1) Mix vegetable packet, 2) Pack of tomatoes, 3) Packet of red onions, 4) Rice packet, 5) Tinned salmon, 6) Olive oil bottle, 7) Curry powder, 8) Chilli powder, 9) Fresh green chillies, 10) Cooking salt.

Assuming they have all the pots/pans/utensils, the challenge was to write a set of instructions for preparing their dish but only using the above list, name the dish and finally, as a paying customer how much would they charge me for the meal. I was looking for their best of culinary skills to prepare a recipe for a nutritious and tasteful dish.

To my astonishment, Aaron from Guayaquil has beaten his previous 'hypersonic CP' (child response letter) record from 23 days to exactly 14 days this time, and taken me by surprise with a recipe of his favorite dish instead. And after 4wks later, today I just got Juliana's recipe from Bicol, again one of her favorite dishes. (added to My Media)

A world apart from Latin America to Asia, yet both having a go at their own dishes seem to suggest that the ingredients I presented don't seem impressive enough to beat cultured palate. The two dishes sound not only delicious but nutritious too, and I must try when I get around to making it!

  1. chelaka, I'm always amazed and inspired by your creativity in communicating with your kids. I'm about to write letters to my kids, and will tell them you idea about having their family members describe each other in 6 words or less. Now I'm going to include your idea about sharing a healthy recipe. Keep those ideas coming, chelaka!

  3. Thank you for your appreciation. Depending on age, you might find interesting interpretation of the task 'describe your family members'. Mairani (age 10) has literally taken it by describing their physical appearance and given a whole different perspective to ‘If you were a coin..’ (letter added to My Media), but the older children should be able to get the ideas. The best of luck with your experiment!

  4. Great idea, maybe you should check twice about the tinned salmon. I don't think everyone knows this ingredient in latin America.. when I lived in Caracas I never saw or eten (tinned) salmon..tinned tuna however is very popular.. Juliana's chicken curry sounds delicious to me..

  5. Oh.. that’s new to me, but Aaron motivated me to try something different from my usual diet. Like today, I bought a packet of persimmon to try his dish and because of his appetite for being 'king' of tomatoes I started using it too in my curries :-)

  7. Morning! I think snail mail are delayed.. you should instead write via MyCI or send an email to your child via children@children.org – response rate currently at 4wks from the Philippines.

  8. Chelaka, what a wonderful idea! I think I will use that with my children as well. Even if they did not utilize the ingredients you listed, it is still interesting to see what their favorite recipe is and have the chance to try to make it yourself!

You should check with CI before sending an email to your sponsored child. Make sure it's allowed as that might be a form of direct contact and not allowed.

DP to Zambia

MSC archived stories -  January 18, 2025 Usually the turnaround time for DP is 4 weeks. It's been a month to next Sunday (Jan 26th) since UPS collected and successfully delivered my DPs to Dulce and the twins. Two years later, last night Simon appeared in my profile as a grown up man. As we aren't getting follow up photos from Zambia anymore, for the first time thought trying DPs to Faith and Simon there, so they will have to come to CC to collect it, where the staff will have a camera to take photos. I remember Zambia used to have the whole family gatherings for EG photoshoot out. So, are there anything special they would be more excited receiving? For example, a football or cricket bat & ball set for Simon, and for Faith.. (no idea!.. may be something to make her elegant hairstyle she has in the latest photo..?). Help me make the list, of course, I don't want to make staff jealous

Pause for Thought! – The value of sponsorship

MSC archived stories - March 2, 2019 As we know the sponsorship does not demand us to write, send special needs or extra gifts to our children, but being a "silent" sponsor does your monthly contribution bring real value (for money) – especially if you live outside the USA, you or CI don't even get tax benefits of your charitable donation? Is this because most sponsors can't afford anymore than the monthly fee to sponsor a child or trust CI so much that they do not feel needing to play an active role in their sponsored child(ren)'s lives to have an impact?   The sponsorship rewards both sponsor and the child through exchange of letters. Then we have social media platforms, like MSC to share our experiences with fellow sponsors – all can be done for free and bring closer understanding of each other and building friendships for life!   But above all sponsorship motivates your child to attend their community center more often not only for letter reading/writing but a...

A step in a higher level journey

Estephanie is my former sponsored child through Children International, whom I cared for four and a half years since she was just 6yrs old. She is a gifted and bright child brought up in a loving family of four in Guatemala. Her abrupt departure from the sponsorship program in June 2019 was totally unexpected, even though I was acutely aware of their situation in the family a s well as the city leading up to this moment. Estephanie is not just any sponsored child, but someone who changed my life forever devoting to children in need. For that reason, I call her ‘my miracle little princess’ and she calls me ‘padrino’ (her godfather). In August 2020, fourteen months after her leaving CI, we met again and reunited with the family. It was our momentous encounter of this lifetime. The family has moved on leaving everything behind to start a new life abroad. More importantly , I was fortunate enough to see Estephanie growing up fast in a new world since I last saw her back home. At age...
